LOOKING BACK
We featured Yamaha's XS650-GS on the cover 40 years ago to
accompany our road test of a bike we called "new wave nostalgia"...
We covered the AMA Pro Awards Banquet from the Disneyland Hotel
in Anaheim, California. Kenny Roberts took the Pro Athlete of the Year
Award… We covered the final round of the AMA/Toyota Supercross
Series at Anaheim Stadium. Kent Howerton ran down Warren Reid
to take the win… Pierre Karsmakers won the AMA 4-Stroke National
Motocross at Carlsbad Raceway.

NOVEMBER 28, 1979
Roger DeCoster from the Inter-Am Motocross Series was pictured on the
cover of Cycle News 50 years ago. It was called the Golden Gate Inter-Am
MX and held at a track near San Francisco. DeCoster, riding a CZ, took the
win, and the top-placing American rider was Barry Higgins in seventh… We
had coverage of the 100-mile Barstow M.C. Desert Run. Desert ace J.N.
Roberts was the overall winner, and Dave Ekins won the Trail Bike class…
We featured a story on "Grandmother Racer," Mrs. Thora Ebbons.
