acob Argubright's heart sank.
"When I came into the last
valley, fifth gear broke," the
Off-Road Support/TBT Racing
Kawasaki privateer said.
Leading the 69th Annual Check
Chase, hosted by the Checkers
Motorcycle Club, he was poised to
win not only the race but the whole
enchilada—the Kenda/SRT AMA
Hare & Hound National Champion-
ship, a goal he'd worked for practi-
cally all of his racing career.
"I could see camp and I was like,
'Oh no! No, no, no!' I thought it
was the clutch at first, but it ended
up being fifth [gear]," he said. "I
shifted down to fourth and then I
knew I could just cruise in. I was
like, 'I could sprint this thing in if I
have to!' "
But his Kawasaki of Simi Valley/
Golden Tyre/Fly Racing-sponsored
KX450 held together long enough
to carry him across the finish line
off Camp Rock Road, a grueling
83 miles after it began at Boone
Road in the Johnson Valley Off-
Highway Vehicle Area.
And winning the ninth and final
round of the series enabled him to
clinch his career-first H&H National
crown by 15 points over Beta's Joe
Wasson, his season-long rival who
finished second on the day, 242-227.
