onathan Rea (Kawasaki) took
two wins at Portimao in Por-
tugal, September 7-8, and had
to suffer one defeat at the hands
of the only rider who is anywhere
near him in the championship
standings—Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.
it Ducati).
The diminutive Spaniard got
the better of Rea in the final long
race of the weekend after finish-
ing race one fourth and second in
the Superpole race, all while still
struggling with an injured shoul-
der and a bike that sometimes
(maybe) plays tricks on him, even
after such an astonishing start to
the season.
Bautista had the better of Rea
in the final race but was exhaust-
ed by the end, and Rea clawed
back voraciously to get to within
0.111 seconds of what would have
been another hat-trick of wins in
green.
After Rea "won" Superpole
from Tom Sykes (BMW), the first
race of the weekend was almost
a walkover for Rea, even if he
was not so happy with his final
