LOOKING BACK
There was a lot of racing coverage in Cycle News 40 years ago, and one
of those races was the Syracuse Mile, where Steve Morehead led a train
of Harley-Davidsons across the finish line… Marland Whaley clinched
the AMA/NATC National Trials Championship with a win in Blue Ridge,
Arizona… We featured a profile on MX tuner Bill Buchka who turned
wrenches for World Champion Graham Noyce's works Honda… New
Zealander Ivan Mauger captured a record sixth World Speedway title.

SEPTEMBER 19, 1979
The Sacramento Mile was featured on the cover of Cycle News 50
years ago. A record crowd of 30,000 watched Triumph-mounted
Chuck Palmgren take the win and the lion's share of the largest purse
ever for a mile race… MX was going strong at Saddleback Park, where
Montesa-mounted Tim Hart won both the 250cc and 500cc Senior
classes. He also won the 125cc Senior class aboard a Sachs… Suzuki
ran a two-page ad boasting the Suzuki T500 for being the first two-
stroke ever to win an AMA National Championship Road Race.
