tight bunch exchanging positions all around the oval. Gauthier cruised to almost a full second lead at the end as Carlile passed Cose for second on the last lap. Varnes passed Rispoli for fourth after starting on the second row. Stollings and Addison also passed Rispoli on the final lap for fifth and sixth. Cody Johncox (Sunnyside Cycles/Bobby Lashley Corp/Luc- zak Racing, Yamaha MT-07), Cory Texter (G&G Racing/Holeshot Pow- ersports, Yamaha MT-07) and Ryan Wells (Waters Auto Body Racing/ Estenson Racing, Yamaha MT-07) rounded out the top 10. MONDAY SPRINGFIELD MILE 2 Heavy rains early Sunday morning left the big oval a quagmire, forc- ing the race to be pushed back to Monday, Labor Day. Despite the dire condition of the racing surface, track personnel worked it into pos- FLAT TRACK AMERICAN FL AT TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP ROUNDS 15 & 16/AUGUST 31 & SEPTEMBER 2, 2019 ILLINOIS STATE FAIRGROUNDS/SPRINGFIELD, ILLINOIS P70 IIIMY OWN RACE: 1 JARED MEES 1-1 AFT TWINS "I needed and wanted to come in here and win both of these miles, and we did it. Some mes you do want to dice it and mix it up and get other players in there and make it a really big chess match. I didn't really want to deal with that because of the way the race track was," said Mees of his Saturday strategy. "Usually at Springfield you are more towards the bo om in the corners. I knew that if we created sepa- ra on as we did, it would be harder for Briar to get all the way to the front. He did a great job ge ng to where he got." Of Monday's race, Mees said, "There have been some bad-ass dudes that have come off the penalty line and won this race. To say I've done it is another thing that I've kind of always wanted to do. The gearing actually was off. We forgot to change the gearing, I guess. It was a li le bit tall, so it took me a few laps for the track to come in and for me to be able to move forward. It was really slick and greasy the first couple laps. It took me a minute to get going. Once everything came in, and everything came up to temperature, I was able to move forward. 14 BRIAR BAUMAN 3-2 AFT TWINS "I think I probably would have ended up in that spot (third) no ma er what. To do it from the back is a lot," said Briar of his Saturday race. "I think I might have been able to catch them if I could have go en some clean air. Jared and Jeffrey were racing each other. On the first 10 laps or so, when I needed to make it count, I was struggling. I've never been on that bike before. There were a few things a li le bit off. I had to adjust. Bryan [Smith] got up in there, and his power drive on his Kawasaki is so much different than the Indian. He had zero corner speed, but so much straightaway speed. He was able to get in and just block everybody for 25 laps. Fortunately, that wasn't going to be the case for me. The track was slick from top to bo om, and the first few laps just tried different lines to see if I could find something. I was losing too much me coming off the corner when they were up high. I didn't realize that I needed to be up high because that is where the moisture was. As for Monday's race, "That was insane is what it was," said Bauman. "I got a li le scared, actually, a few mes. That is the Briar Bauman (14) held off his brother, Bronson, again in Monday's race, only this time it was for second place.
