VOLUME 56 ISSUE 35 SEPTEMBER 4, 2019 P33 Scotty Pollacheck and reigning champ Matt Smith during Mon- day's final elimination rounds. Despite the loss, Hines was able to lock up the top spot in the Countdown to the Championship standings. Before Hines took over on Monday, the start of the Vance & Hines team had been Angelle Sampey who qualified on the pole for the first time since join- ing the Harley squad last March. Sampey, a three-time NHRA champ, admittedly struggled to adjust to the Harley platform, but turned in her best showing of the season with a 6.816. Sampey now has been the top qualifier 50 times in her career, more than any other rider in the class. With the regular season com- plete, the playoff round will begin in two weeks in Reading, Penn- sylvania, where the top 10 riders in the class will continue their pursuit of the Mello Yello Cham- pionship and the $75,000 bonus that goes with it. In addition to Hines, the top seed, the rest of the contenders include Eddie Krawiec, Matt Smith, Hector Arana Jr., Savoie, Karen Stoffer, Angie Smith, Angelle Sampey, Ryan Oehler and Hector Arana Sr. Kevin McKenna FINAL 1. Jerry Savoie (Suz) 2. Andrew Hines (H-D)
