LOOKING BACK
Our feature story 40 years ago was our preview of the ISDT in West
Germany. The U.S. Trophy team was made up of Dick Burleson,
Jack Penton, Frank Gallo, Larry Roeseler, Kevin Lavoie and Ted
Leimbach. Doug Chandler stole the show at the AMA Amateur TT
Nationals at Ascot Park… Mike Kidd won the Indy Mile, while Steve
Eklund stretched out his championship points lead… Elmer Trett and
Terry Vance were the big winners at the IDBA Summer Nationals at
Capitol Raceway.

Miss Champion Helmets and actress Paula Bennett was pictured on
the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago posing on a speedway bike
to promote the Los Angels Sports Arena Indoor Speedway Series…
We featured coverage of the Mammoth Mountain Motocross, where
Billy Silverthorn won both the 250 and 500cc Senior classes… We
covered Terry Davis' win at the Rosarita Beach MX in Mexico. Thirteen-
year-old Martin "Marty" Tripes won the 125cc class with lap times that
rivaled the Open Expert-class riders.
