on the Buell V-twins. The rules were designed to restore parity to the class and
prevent a repeat of the 2012 season,
when Vance & Hines Harley riders Eddie
Krawiec and Andrew Hines combined
to win 15 of 16 events and the Suzuki's
were shut out of the winner's circle for
the first time in the history of the class.
The new rules had an impact as the
Harley's did not dominate, although
Hines was surprisingly competitive with
a best of 6.836 that was good for the
number-five spot in qualifying. Hines
and Krawiec both lost in the quarterfinal round, opening the door for Arana to take his fourth-career victory.
After qualifying second in the record
field with a 6.80 elapsed time, Arana
Jr. rolled to a 6.82 in his round one win
over Michael Phillips and then downed
