AUGUST30, 1989
Nicky Hayden was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 20 years
ago for capturing his first career Grand National victory. He did it at the
Hagerstown Half Mile. Joe Kopp was second and Rich King third…
The Czech 500cc GP had to be red flagged when Jamie Whitham
crashed, and his factory Modenas caught fire. Tadayuki Okada went
on to win. Valentino Rossi won the 250 GP… We tested the Aprillia
RSV Mille SP… Tommy Miceli won the NHRA Pro Modified class at
Indianapolis.
We ran a photo of Eddie Lawson leading Wayne Rainey at the Swedish
GP 30 years ago. Rainey crashed out and Lawson took the win and points
lead… We also featured coverage of the opening round of the AMA 500cc
Motocross National Championship from Spring Creek. Jeff Ward won
both motos; Damon Bradshaw won the 125cc class… Jimmy Button
and Robbie Neeley were the big
winners at Loretta Lynn's 30 years
ago. Steve Lamson, Jeff Emig,
and Billy Fosnock were some the
big bike A-class champions.
