ost tracks on the Lucas
Oil/AMA Pro Motocross
Championship sched-
ule share a reasonably similar
makeup in terms of the type of dirt
and the preparation, but Unadilla
has always stood out on its own.
It's known as a "European style"
racetrack, which means it has
more natural terrain than a lot of
modern tracks, and the dirt tends
to be a bit rocky (they sift out as
many rocks as they can for rider
safety) and hard-packed, even
though it ruts up really nicely
under many conditions.
It really is a European-style
racetrack. Just ask Team Honda
HRC's Ken Roczen, originally
from Germany, who dominated
the 450MX class in front of Red
Bull KTM's Marvin Musquin, from
France, who hasn't ever finished
outside of the top three in his
450MX career at Unadilla. Or ask
250MX winner Dylan Ferrandis,
also from France, who won at
Unadilla like he did last year.
But the titles still seem likely to
go to Americans this year.
450MX
Roczen was on another level en-
tirely at Unadilla, qualifying first by
more than three seconds in front
of Red Bull KTM's Cooper Webb,
and then walking away with both
moto victories, officially winning
the motos by a combined 38 sec-
onds. The weekend off helped his
mystery illness considerably.
"I honestly haven't done
anything the last two weeks,"
Roczen said. "I want the season
to be done so I can give my body
a rest, but I really like this track.
Today, I was just on. I was just
gelling very well. I said yesterday
that I want to go 1-1, and I said it
all day today, so to top it off with
both practice wins and two moto
wins, I can't be more happy."
The last time Roczen went 1-1 at
a National was in August of 2016
at the series finale in Indiana,
where Roczen, on his RCH Su-
zuki, capped off a 24-moto series
with 20 moto wins, three second-
place finishes, one fourth-place
finish, and an 86-point champion-
ship lead over Eli Tomac, who has
won every 450MX title since.
