P126 50 Years Ago AUGUST 5, 1969 LOOKING BACK Mark "The Bomer" Barnett was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 40 years ago. Barnett won the 125cc World Championship MX round in Lexington, Ohio. Barnett traded moto wins with Broc Glover. The top- placing non-American was Belgium's Gaston Rahier, who went 3-5… In Switzerland, Heikki Mikkola won the 500cc MX GP; Brad Lackey went DNF-4… We ran a feature on motorcycle training, saying that education, not regulation, is the key to motorcycle safety… Steve Eklund extended his championship points lead after winning the AMA/GNC TT at Ascot. 40 Years Ago AUGUST 1, 1979 A photo of Chuck Palmgren (38) leading Mert Lawwill (18) was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago. Palmgren went on to win the 20-Mile Final at the Santa Rosa Mile in California, but Lawwill emerged with a larger points lead over Gene Romero… We had full coverage of the Four Aces M.C. European Scrambles from California City. Larry Bergquist took the Open Am-Expert-class victory… Gary Bailey won the Stumpjumpers TT Scrambles in Lake Elsinore, California. (Right) Tony Meiring (left) and Bryan Smith (right) were named co-recipients of the AMA Horizon Award 20 years ago. Steve Eklund won the AMA/GNC TT at Ascot 40 years ago.
