Anthony Gobert took center stage for winning the AMA/MBNA
Superbike race at Road Atlanta… Alex Criville also got a piece of the
cover for winning the 500cc Grand Prix at Mugello… We reported
that Mickael Pichon had been released from his contract with Honda
after striking an AMA official during an altercation in the pits at the
AMA National MX at High Point… Dutchman Remy Van Rees won
the 250cc MXGP at Foxhill (England)… Road racer Simon Beck was
killed during practice at the Isle of Man TT.
Our preview of the 1989 U.S. 500cc MX GP was our feature story
in Cycle News 30 years ago. It was round seven of the series and
was about to descend on Hollister, California… Steve Morehead
won the rain-delayed Louisville Half Mile… The 14th round of the AMA
Supercross Series played out at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds in
Oklahoma City, where Jeff Stanton clinched the championship and
Jeff Ward won the race… Jordi
Tarres won the World Championship
Trials round in Tennessee.
