LOOKING BACK
Our cover 50 years ago featured a photo from the Laconia 100-Mile AMA
National Championship Road Race. Freddie Nix rode a Harley-Davidson
750cc KR to victory… We had coverage of the Carlsbad-Cycle News
Motorcycle Circus held at Carlsbad Raceway. The weekend festival included
a variety of racing, including TT, motocross, hillclimb and road racing. The
event was filmed for TV, and even Evel Knievel attended and jumped parked
vans for the fans… We had coverage of the Baja 500. Ducati-mounted Doug
Douglas and Jim McClerk took the motorcycle-class win.
The Flying Dutchman Gerrit Wolsink was pictured on the cover of Cycle
News 40 years ago for winning the Bel-Ray USGP of Motocross from
Carlsbad Raceway. The top American was Chuck Sun in third place; Brad
Lackey went DNF-1. A claimed 33,000 fans attended…. Jack Johnson
became the first person ever to win the Baja Internacional (500) solo. The
Scot Harden/Brent Wallingsford team took second, and we also featured
an interview with the Baja/desert racing duo.
