IN THE WIND P46 Connor Penhall Memorial Cup T he fifth running of the Connor Penhall Memorial Cup was held at Speedway At The Grand in the City of Industry, California, May 29. Connor is the son of two- time World Speedway Champion Bruce Penhall, and this event was created to help raise the aware- ness of the dangers of drinking and driving, and the safety of all freeway construction workers. Connor lost his life seven years ago while on the job working on a freeway in California when he was hit and killed by a drunk driver. A who's who of motorcycle rac- ing attended, including Jeff Ward who was the evening's Grand Marshal and had a match race with four-time World Speedway Champion Greg Hancock. National Champion Billy Janniro, who has won this event the last four years, was hoping to win his fifth Troy Lee-painted helmet that is handed out to the night's winner every year. Janniro looked good, as he was the top scorer going into the final with 17 points, having won every heat but his first. In the Connor Penhall Memo- rial Cup Final, Janniro lined up against the Ruml brothers, Max and Dillan, who were second and third on points for the night, and fourth point-getter Austin Novra- til, who had just returned from Europe riding in the Speedway of Nations for the USA. When the gate dropped, it was Janniro who got the drive off the start, with Novratil right on his rear wheel. Coming into turn three, Dillon Ruml went down, remounted and played chaser the rest of the race. Janniro and Novratil went bar to bar, with Novratil driving un- derneath Janniro going into turn one. Janniro tried everything to get back by Novratil but ran out of time, as Novratil took the win and the Troy Lee Designs helmet over Janniro, Max Ruml and a distant Dillon Ruml. The Richfield Field Office has rescinded the 2006 Factory Butte OHV travel restriction after meeting criteria to develop a threatened and endangered species monitoring plan and installing infrastruc- ture to protect endangered cactus species. Two OHV areas were subject to temporary travel restrictions until monitoring and infra- structure requirements were in place: Factory Butte (5300 acres) and Caineville Cove (100 acres). After meeting the criteria, those areas are now available for motorized use. Additionally, riders can continue to enjoy cross-country riding at Factory Butte within the Swing Arm City OHV Play Area (2602 acres) and more than 200 miles of designated routes in the area. CN
