2019 Super Trial Series Gets Underway
P
at Smage flexed his muscles
at the May 17-19 Super Trial
in Luckenbach, Texas, easily
winning the invitation-only Pro
Trials event in front of a Texas-
sized audience. The new Super
Trial Series is designed to bring
trials to the public and Lucken-
bach was a perfect venue, with
its "old-west-style" storefronts,
general store and post office.
The event featured the top pro
trials riders in America (men and
women), plus German rider Jan
Peters and former British Wom-
en's champ Donna Fox.
With the 2019 U.S. National
MotoTrials Series kicking off next
weekend in Nebraska, the Super
Trial served as a good warm-up
for the top riders, and it was
also a good indicator of who did
(and didn't) do their homework
during the off-season. It was also
the opening round of the two-
round 2019 Super Trial Series
that will wrap up with its finale on
October 18-19 in Luckenbach.
The promoters are expected to
expand the series to five rounds
in 2020.
Friday's round consisted of
one lap of six man-made sec-
tions, and Smage (FactoryONE
RYP Sherco) needed only one
point to finish it. Karl Davis
(FactoryONE RYP Scorpa) was
second with 12 points, while Alex
Niederer (GasGas North Amer-
ica) was third with 25. German
Jan Peters and Daniel Blanc-
Gonnet (GasGas North America)
were fourth and fifth, each with
27 points.
Saturday's round was char-
acterized as a shootout, which
saw two riders eliminated after
the first three sections, and two
more eliminated after the next
two sections, leaving only five to
ride the final section.
