Freeman Sweeps Spanish Grand Prix
World Enduro
G
reat Britain's Brad Freeman
won both days of the Span-
ish Grand Prix, round three of
the FIM Maxxis Enduro World
Championship, May 11-12, to take
the overall win in the premier
EnduroGP class. With his perfect
weekend, the Beta rider shot
straight to the top of the champi-
onship points, overtaking former
leader, fellow countryman Steve
Holcombe, also a Beta pilot.
"Being the leader of my class
was already a dream for me. So
leading the EnduroGP class too
is a crazy feeling for me. I am
delighted with how the day went
for me. And I'm so happy to have
been able to fight all day with
Danny McCanney. I am sad for
what's happening to Steve, we
are all here to fight at the fore-
front within tenths of a second,
I hope he gets back in shape as
soon as possible."
Holcombe, the early champi-
onship leader, revealed on Sat-
urday that he's been diagnosed
with a virus that has been sap-
ping his energy. The defending
champion gave it all he had over
the weekend, finishing second
on Saturday and sixth on Sunday.
"I must confess that I am really
at a loss," Holcombe said on Sat-
urday. "I can't say much for the
moment, but something is wrong
with my body. I'm exhausted from
today, and I'm worried about
my physical condition. Despite
today's result not being too bad,
it does not comfort me at all."
Second overall on the week-
end was Great Britain's Danny
McCanney on the factory TM.
McCanney had his best day
on Sunday when he pressured
Freeman the whole way and was
threatening for the day's win. He
came up just short.
"I started today really well by
winning the first two tests of the
day," McCanney said on Sun-
day. "Maybe I attacked a bit too
early. But in the meantime, I am
quite satisfied with my tour, and
I am confident for the rest of the
season."
Freeman now leads the
championship with 109 points to
Holcombe's 104. McCanney is
third with 90 points.
2018 WORCS Champion Gia-
como Redondi (Husqvarna) went
5-3 over the weekend. The Italian
is currently seventh in the Endu-
roGP Championship. CN
