IN THE WIND P36 Bautista away and clear. But an electronics issue intervened, and he had to retire after completing nine laps. The decision to call an end to the races after torrential rains fell, shortly after the skies started spit- ting again during the WorldSSP race, was contentious. It was not about the severity of the rain for some riders, even though some parts of the circuit held water, it was as much about the proximity of the barriers at Imola, especially in these conditions where you can crash anywhere. Some riders wanted to run, some not, but af- ter everybody lined up again after the two sighting laps of the much delayed final race "start," another delay was called, which then became an abandonment of all action, including the scheduled WorldSSP300 race. In the points, Bautista has a slightly reduced advantage to Rea of 43. Bautista now has 263 points, Rea 220, Lowes 140, VDM 134, Haslam 108 and Davies 85. WorldSSP The fifth race of 2019 was dra- matic all the way. White flags to show sprinkles of rain appeared at different times all over the track, there were some close-up smack-downs, and the winning margin was only 0.234 seconds. "I had to work hard for the win here because Federico was really fast today," Randy Krummenacher said afterward of his third win of the year. "I changed a bit my ap- proach in the race and let Fed- erico pass before then applying as much pressure as possible." The WorldSSP race was de- cided when Federico Caricasulo started to feel his bike start misfir- ing, as Krummenacher came past at speed, setting his fastest pace on lap 16 of 17. The eventual third-place-man was MV Agusta Reparto Corse runner Raffaele De Rosa, who claimed third after early leader Jules Cluzel (GMT94 Yamaha) and a highly motivated and very fast Lucas Mahias (Kawasaki Puc- cetti Racing) collided when Cluzel slowed exiting the final chicane. Cluzel and Mahias got going again, with Cluzel finally seventh and a seething Mahias eighth. Thomas Gradinger (Kallio Ya- maha) got caught up in Mahias' bike, and he fell and was unable to restart. The battle for fourth was won by Mahias' teammate Hikari Okubo, for his best career result of fourth. Just behind was the privateer Pedercini Kawasaki and former race winner in this class, Ayrton Badovini. As the leader crossed the line a red flag was thrown, after a massive high-side from wild card rider Massimo Roccoli left his Yamaha directly on the track at the second Rivazza corner. The top five got 17 laps on their record, everyone else was classi- fied in the order they finished the sector of the track they were on when the red flag came out. In the points, Krummenacher has 115 (only ten points from per- fect). Caricasulo has 93, Cluzel 78 and Okubo 50. Gordon Ritchie WORLDSBK Race One 1. Jonathan Rea (Kaw) 2. Alvaro Bautista (Duc) 3.
