"About halfway through the race, he wasn't really pulling away. I saw a little bit of hope. I just pushed harder and kept gaining on him a little bit. It felt good that I was gaining on him." As the laps dwindled, so did Bau- man's lead. Bauman first got into lapped traffic on lap 20 but did not appear to have much of a problem working his way through. Lapped traffic may not have played as much a part of the race as the sun-baked groove that appeared to take its toll on Bauman's rear tire. "Those last couple of laps, the track just started getting really, really greasy," Bauman said. "We had so much grip early on and the tire kind of got hot earlier. JD came by me, and he was still pretty hooked up, and I was spinning. I didn't have much fight there at the end... I had nothing for him. He came by me like I was tied to a tree. The bike was great all night. I thought I was in a pretty good position. I got the start and did everything right. The only problem is JD Beach came, so here were are in second." Just like that, Beach had won his first GNC/AFT Twins race and gave Yamaha its first "Twins" win since 1981, when Scott Pearson won the Peoria TT. Bauman dropped two seconds back on the last lap, while Mees cruised all alone in third just over 19 seconds back.
