AMERICAN FLAT TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP
ROUND 4/APRIL 27, 2019

He's been fast all year," said Beach.
"About halfway through the race, he
wasn't really pulling away. I saw a little bit
of hope. I just pushed harder and kept
gaining on him a little bit. It felt good that
I was gaining on him."
As the laps dwindled, so did Bau-
man's lead. Bauman first got into lapped
traffic on lap 20 but did not appear to
have much of a problem working his way
through. Lapped traffic may not have
played as much a part of the race as the
sun-baked groove that appeared to take
its toll on Bauman's rear
tire.
"Those last couple
of laps, the track just
started getting really,
really greasy," Bauman
said. "We had so much
grip early on and the tire
kind of got hot earlier.
JD came by me, and he
was still pretty hooked
up, and I was spinning.
I didn't have much fight
there at the end... I had
nothing for him. He came
by me like I was tied to a
tree. The bike was great
all night. I thought I was
in a pretty good position.
I got the start and did everything right.
The only problem is JD Beach came, so
here were are in second."
Just like that, Beach had won his first
GNC/AFT Twins race and gave Yamaha
its first "Twins" win since 1981, when
Scott Pearson won the Peoria TT.
Bauman dropped two seconds back
on the last lap, while Mees cruised all
alone in third just over 19 seconds back.
Carver was just able to hold off Johnson,
who put the second Estenson Racing
mount into the top five.
