LOOKING BACK
Our cover 50 years ago was all about the upcoming motorcycle show at
the Los Angeles Sports Arena. We reminded our readers to mark their
calendars… We covered Ron Nelson's and John DeSoto's European
debut in Jonzac, France. The two-man American team also competed in
the Spanish Grand Prix. They didn't win but they did turn some heads…
We also covered Gene Romero's win at the San Jose Half Mile… We
reported that California had killed its proposed mandatory helmet law.
We pictured Mike Kidd at the Sacramento Mile on the cover of Cycle
News 40 years ago. Kidd edged out Steve Eklund for the win… We
featured our report on the Tecate 500. Results weren't official yet, but it
appeared that A.C. Bakken had won. Of the 260 starters, 130 made it
to the finish line… CN Editor Dale Brown had an in-depth interview with
Danny "Magoo" Chandler… We covered the Gumball Rally… Eddie
Lawson warmed up for the Sacramento Mile by winning the Expert class
at Ascot flat track.
