MOTOAMERICA
FIM NORTH AMERICAN ROAD RACING CHAMPIONSHIP
ROUND 1 / APRIL 5-7, 2019
ROAD ATLANTA / BRASELTON, GA
P72
"I was following Toni and I kind
of thought that there were one or
two places where I could pass
him that would have been sketchy,
but I think it would have been
possible," Scholtz said. "So, I was
trying to save it for the final lap.
Then, unfortunately, I think it was
going into corner six, Cameron
passed me and then we were
coming up on the lapped rider. I
was hoping that Cameron was go-
ing to pass him and actually stand
him up kind of thing, or the lapped
rider would follow Cameron and
I could draft him and sort of get
up next to Cameron and pass him
and set up the final lap. Unfortu-
nately, he took them pretty hard.
Cameron touched him, which
I'm thankful for that, but I'm
pretty frustrated with how the
race went," he said of race two.
While sitting a close second
and with leader Elias plowing his
way through the lapped traffic
ahead, Beaubier and Scholtz
caught the worst of it in Samuel
Trepanier (Blysk Racing BMW),
losing the tow to the Spaniard
with two laps to go. He then
suffered the indignity of having
privateer Scholtz hold him off for
second to the flag.
It was a solid weekend for
Scholtz and Team Westby, with
4-2 results and the fact he was
right with Elias for the race-two
win until the lapper got in the
way.
In both Superbike races, it
was Elias, Beaubier, Scholtz,
Beach and, in race one, Herrin,
who would run at the front, with
a large gap to the riders fighting
for fifth backward.
Race-one winner Beaubier
was careful in his approach to
the Atlanta weekend, acutely
aware this time last year he failed
to finish race one and only came
away with one second place to
his name heading into COTA.
"At the end of the day I'm
pretty happy coming out of here
with a first and a third and a
decent amount of points—a lot
more points than we've come
out of the first round in the last
few years," Beaubier said. "So,
Elias capped the weekend off with the win in race two.
