P120 50 Years Ago APRIL 22, 1969 LOOKING BACK That's Mert Lawwill racing in Boise on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago… We had coverage of the first-ever Curly Fern National Enduro in New Jersey. Honda-mounted Jack McLane out-dueled John Penton for the overall. Former champ Bill Baird was a surprise non-starter, saying that a knee injury would most likely force his retirement… Gary Bailey got back to his winning ways at Carlsbad MX… We covered the eighth annual Yuma Prison Run in Arizona that saw an estimated 1800-2000 participants. We pictured a variety of action photos from Cyclerama '79 that was held at Saddleback Park. Winners included Mike Bell, Goat Breker, Erik Kehoe, George Holland and hillclimber Neal Mackel… Bob Hannah and Broc Glover continued to dominate the early rounds of the AMA 125/250 National MX Championship. Their latest success came at Canyon Raceway in Phoenix, Arizona… The flat track racing season at Ascot Park got underway and Hank Scott won the Trophy Dash and Expert main. 40 Years Ago APRIL 18, 1979 (Left) Gary Bailey en route to another win at Carlsbad 50 years ago.
