LOOKING BACK
That's Mert Lawwill racing in Boise on the cover of Cycle News 50 years
ago… We had coverage of the first-ever Curly Fern National Enduro in New
Jersey. Honda-mounted Jack McLane out-dueled John Penton for the
overall. Former champ Bill Baird was
a surprise non-starter, saying that a
knee injury would most likely force his
retirement… Gary Bailey got back to
his winning ways at Carlsbad MX…
We covered the eighth annual Yuma
Prison Run in Arizona that saw an
estimated 1800-2000 participants.
We pictured a variety of action photos from Cyclerama '79 that was held
at Saddleback Park. Winners included Mike Bell, Goat Breker, Erik
Kehoe, George Holland and hillclimber Neal Mackel… Bob Hannah
and Broc Glover continued to dominate the early rounds of the AMA
125/250 National MX Championship. Their latest success came at
Canyon Raceway in Phoenix, Arizona… The flat track racing season at
Ascot Park got underway and Hank Scott won the Trophy Dash and
Expert main.
