Sonora Rally
Tests Out
All-Digital
Roadbook
I
CO Racing, in partnership with F2r,
recently unveiled a prototype digital
roadbook system, and the 2019 Yoko-
hama Sonora Rally provided the ideal
testing grounds for a system they hope
will help change rally racing for the bet-
ter. "This all digital roadbook intends
to demolish the need for 'homework'
and the now infamous Map Men, by
allowing organizers to load pre-marked
roadbook files onto the device in the
morning at the start of each stage,"
a release from the Sonora Rally
revealed. The rally marked the first of-
ficial trial of the new system, which ICO
owner Dave Peckham says "went off
without a hitch." The release also hints
that the FIM and ASO are "interested"
in the new system, which could poten-
tially revolutionize FIM Cross Country
Rally racing and the Dakar Rally.
The 2019 running of the Dakar
Rally back in January was riddled with
drama concerning roadbook navigation
tactics, and the use of satellite map-
ping systems (like Google Earth) that
allow teams to virtually pre-run the next
day's course ahead of time. The digital
roadbook would potentially replace
the paper roll-charts currently in use in
most rallies, but unlike the roll-charts,
which competitors receive the evening
before the stage so they have time to
review and mark them up, the digital
roadbook would be pre-marked, and
uploaded at the start of each stage. CN
