LOOKING BACK
The top three finishers of the of the 64 starters from the 28th running of
the Daytona 200 were pictured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago.
Winner Cal Rayborn (25) is flanked by runner-up Ron Grant (12) and
Mike Duff (17). It was Rayborn's second straight win at the 200… John
Penton won the Alligator Endurance Run, which was held in conjunction
with the AMA Motorcycle Classic at Daytona Beach…We covered Class-A
Speedway racing from Whiteman Stadium in Pacoima, California. Steve
Bast was the winner.
Bob Hannah was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 40 years ago
for winning both nights of racing at the Houston Supercross at the
Astrodome… We had our coverage of the Alligator Enduro. Herluf
Johnson, aboard a Suzuki PE175, was the overall winner… We featured
an interview with "the best Six Days rider in America," Frank Gallo… We
reported that three-time 500cc World MX Champion Heikki Mikkola
suffered a knee injury in a pre-season race and would most likely miss
the first half of the GP series.
