First Ever Daytona Vintage Supercross Crowns Champions T he inaugural Daytona Vintage Supercross (DVSX) took place, Wednesday, March 12, at Daytona International Speedway, featuring 28 classes ranging from 125cc to Golden Masters (60+). Classes were broken into six different groups starting with Vintage and going through 2008, with the Revolution 2 classes. Championships were awarded by a two-moto format. In vintage racing, the bikes are as much a part of the story as the racing. During the afternoon, Satur- day, March 9, many of the vintage bikes that were ridden Tuesday were showcased in the Fan Zone during the Daytona Supercross, as the MX Sports staff awarded their picks for Best in Show. Four-time Daytona SX winner Jeff Stanton served as Grand Marshal for the Inaugural Daytona Vintage Supercross and par- ticipated in a couple of classes, winning the Evolution 3 125 and Evolution 2 Masters classes. Racing got underway early Tuesday morning with the Vintage Open class, Robbie Conklin took the win on a beautifully restored 1974 Maico 400. Robert Berry was the most suc- cessful winner of the event, claim- ing three championships during the one-day event. Riding a fully restored 1978 Maico 250, Berry took wins in the Evo 1 Open, Evo 2 Open, and Evo 3 Open classes. "We had an old 400 frame laying around and my dad bought a 250 Maico on Craigslist for $1500, so we made one bike out of two," said Berry. The Vintage 125 class, which was a cool exhibition of 70's era vintage bikes, produced great 1975 Suzuki RM125 versus 1974 Suzuki TM125. You don't see match-ups like this much anymore, but you did at the Daytona Vintage SX. PHOTOS: ROB KOY IN THE WIND P34
