Hammaker, Frye Star At Ricky Carmichael Daytona Amateur SX T he 10th Annual Ricky Carmi- chael Daytona Amateur Super- cross (RCSX), held on the infield of Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida, March 10- 11, crowned 34 national champions over two days of competition. The race drew 1159 entries from all over the world, which included some of the biggest names in amateur mo- tocross. There were 82 races in all. Among the many winners, Seth Hammaker (Kawasaki) and Jarrett Frye (Yamaha) turned in standout performances. Frye crushed the Schoolboy 2 class and the 250 and 450 B classes, while Ham- maker won titles in the 250 A and the Open Pro divisions. The Yamaha rider, Frye, was the only rider to capture three titles at this year's event. His most dominant performance came in the Schoolboy 2 class. Frye, rid- ing for the Monster Energy/Yama- lube/Star Racing Yamaha Team, grabbed the holeshot in the Schoolboy 2 final. He immediate- ly pulled away from the field with his teammate Matt LeBlanc in second. Frye continued to stretch his lead, eventually finishing eight seconds ahead of LeBlanc at the finish. Jonah Geistler (KTM) moved around Jack Rogers (Ya- maha) to claim third. Nate Thrasher was fifth overall on a 125cc two-stroke. Frye also won the 450 B class, with Husqvarna-mounted Colin Park in second and Kawasaki's Bjorn Viney in third. After taking the lead, Frye rode unchallenged en route to the win. In the 250 B Limited class, Jace Kessler (Husqvarna) took the win. He had to start from the extreme outside on the starting gate, a result of DNFing his heat race. In that race, he took a foot- peg to his front wheel. This blew out his spokes and forced him to drop out of the race. Despite a poor starting position in the final, Kessler was right be- hind the leaders by the end of the first lap. He took the lead halfway into the race, passing Yamaha- mounted Blake Hoag. "I just held it on through the moguls and made a block- pass for the lead," said Kessler. "Since I DNFed my heat race, I was way outside on the start gate, so I tried to find a gate that had a lot of moisture. I didn't get the best of starts, so I just made some quick passes. Once in the lead, I just tried to ride my own race and build up a lead." At the finish, Kessler took the win over Gerhard Matamoros (Yamaha) of Honduras. Wyatt Lieback (KTM) was third, Seth Brown (KTM) fourth and Evan Haimowitz (Yamaha) fifth. Like Frye, Seth Hammaker also had a good weekend at the Ricky Carmichael Daytona Amateur Su- percross.
