Tomac was the Tomac of old
from this point onward, and he
reeled off the quickest lap time
of the race (1:09.445) on the
sixth lap en route to victory,
taking the checkered flag 6.889
seconds ahead of his near-
est competitor, Webb, at the
21:28.282 minute mark (18 laps)
of the race.
"I had a tough start to the
day," Tomac said. "At one point,
Marvin had a lap time that was
So heading into the main
event, we still weren't wholly
convinced which Tomac had
come to Daytona, and it ap-
peared that it was the off
Tomac. That's because after
a second-place start, behind
holeshotter Blake Baggett, he
suddenly drifted backward when
Musquin and Joey Savatgy both
got around him in quick succes-
sion. Very un-Tomac-like.
Suddenly, Tomac turned on.
He got back by Savatgy and
Musquin almost as quickly as
they had gotten around him.
Then he got around Baggett
for the lead, though Baggett
did give him a good fight and
passed him back for a moment
after Tomac made a "dork" mis-
take. By the fourth lap, though,
Tomac was in charge again,
and this time there was no go-
ing backward. Only forwards.
Tomac was indeed on.
