VOL. 56 ISSUE 10 MARCH 12, 2019 P45 Erik Buell Launches Electric Motorcycle E rik Buell's latest busi- ness venture has been launched, with the creator of the now defunct Buell motor- cycle company creating "Fu- ell," with business partners Frederic Vasseur of Formula One fame and entrepreneur Francois Terny. The company has launched two motorcycles for the electric vehicle space—an equivalent small displacement motorcycle called the Flow and an electric pedal-assist bicycle called the Fluid. The Flow gets two different versions—a 15-hp model that will fall under most countries moped laws and a full-size 47-hp model for urban motorcycle use. Range is claimed to be 125 miles with almost 74 lb-ft of torque from two 500Wh, removable batteries with pricing suggested at $10,995. The pedal assist Fluid also comes in two models, one that will go up to 20 mph and another that will reach 28 mph and will retail for $3295. Fuell claims deliveries will start in 2019 for the Fluid, with the Flow expected to come in 2021. CN David Castera Appointed New Dakar Rally Director The Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO), promoters of the Dakar Rally, recently appointed David Castera as the new Rally Director. Longtime director Etienne Lavigne, who has retained the position for 15 years, has stepped down, and will take on a new role within the ASO. Castera formerly served as the Dakar Sporting Director for ten years, before that position was handed to Marc Coma in 2016. Castera is also a former racer, having competed in the motorcycle class, where he has a few podiums to his name. He has also landed on the Dakar podium as a co-driver for Cyril Despres (2017), and most recently served as the co-driver for Mr. Dakar himself, Stephane Peterhansel. The immediate task facing Castera will be the location of the 2020 Dakar Rally. Rumors and speculation have indicated that the world-famous rally will be relocating to Saudi Arabia, although any official announcement from the Dakar Rally or ASO has yet to be made.
