Stewart Wins Glen Helen NGPC
T
hree high-speed, fairly pain-
ful crashes on the asphalt
sections as well as a few lesser
mistakes didn't keep Johnny
Campbell Racing (JCR) Honda's
Trevor Stewart from taking his
first victory of the season at the
27th Annual Prairie Dogs Grand
Prix, hosted by the Prairie Dogs
Motorcycle Club at Glen Helen
Raceway Park.
Round three of the FMF AMA
National Grand Prix Champion-
ship (NGPC) Series, heavy rains
on Friday night left the club
scrambling to modify the original
course layout, though it dried
out enough so the main event on
Sunday featured much improved
conditions that led to close,
back-and-forth battles, especially
at the front.
Besides Stewart, FMF/Maxx-
is/RPM Racing KTM's Eric Yorba
and Purvines Racing Yamaha's
Justin Seeds spent the entire
race leading at one point or an-
other with Seeds bouncing back
from a big get-off to claim second
while Yorba tweaked a knee that
forced him to back off in the latter
stages and settle for third.
"Something [like Supermoto
lesson] needs to happen be-
cause this Glen Helen asphalt
and myself are not friends!" the
CRF450RX-mounted Stewart
exclaimed. Of the three spills
on pavement, the first one did
the most damage, he explained,
because it damaged the throttle
tube, forcing him to deliberately
close it as well as open it for the
rest of the race.
"Other than that, I was fighting
myself today so much, mentally
with the mistakes I kept making.
"With three crashes and a
couple other mistakes and one
run-in with a lapper, I'm lucky to
come away on top and maintain
a points lead and pull away a little
bit," he said, adding, "Also, I'd
like to say I do apologize to any
lapper that I yelled at. I had a bad
day and I tend to take it out on
other people."
