LOOKING BACK
A photo taken at the High Mountain Enduro made up the CN cover
50 years ago. We had full coverage of the 77-mile enduro that wound
its way through the Las Padres National Forest near Santa Margarita,
California. Who won? Good question. Back then you had to wait
sometimes a few weeks before results were calculated… Despite 30
mph winds, rain and 30-degree temperatures, the ACA held its first road
race of the year at Willow Springs. Dave Damron made the headlines
that day for winning the Open class.
Our coverage of the Soboba and Un-Leap Year Grands Prix were our
feature stories 40 years ago, but pictured on the cover was Morgan
Malocco from the Gold Digger Hare Scrambles. Bob Balentine was the
Soboba GP winner and Rex Staten fended off Steve Bauer to win the
Un-Leap Year GP from Corona, California. Also pictured on the cover was
Suzuki's new GS1000L… The AFM held its season opener at Ontario
Motor Speedway, where Wes Cooley held off Don Emde and Steve
McLaughlin for the win.
