LOOKING BACK
We ran a photo from the Houston Short Track, which was held inside
the Astrodome, on the cover 50 years ago. Ronnie Rall outdueled Bart
Markel for the Short Track National win and Skip Van Leeuwen topped
the TT National the next day. The top amateurs were Dave Aldana (ST)
and Keith Mashburn (TT)…. Also pictured on the cover was a photo from
the Elsinore Grand Prix. It took three days to figure out who the winner
was; it turned out to be Gunnar Lindstrom.
Lon Peterson at the Parker 400 was pictured on the cover of Cycle
News 40 years ago. He and teammate Kem Clark ended up finishing
second in Class 22 to overall and Class 22 winners Scot Harden and
Brent Wallingsford… We covered the Seattle Supercross from the
Kingdome, where Yamaha teammates Mike Bell and Bob Hannah
traded wins when the race was a doubleheader… Danny "Magoo"
Chandler was one of the big winners at the CMC/Suzuki Golden State
MX Series at Dunlop Cycle Park.
