MONSTER ENERGY AMA SUPERCROSS, AN FIM WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
ROUND 5 / FEBRUARY 3, 2019
PETCO PARK / SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA
P62
250SX WEST
Adam Cianciarulo (Monster Energy/Pro
Circuit Kawasaki) has been his own worst
enemy so far in 2019. He won two of the
first four rounds, but finished fifth in the
other two after crashes. Meanwhile, Colt
Nichols was on the podium every weekend
and still held on to the points lead, while
his Monster Energy/Yamalube/Star Rac-
ing Yamaha teammate Dylan Ferrandis was
also on the podium almost every weekend
and perennial championship contender
Shane McElrath (TLD/Red Bull KTM) was
right in the thick of it yet again, as well.
But anything can happen at mud
races, and it did for all three of Ciancia-
rulo's toughest competitors. First, McEl-
rath had to transfer to the main event
through the LCQ, then fell right away in
the main event. After that, he went into
damage control and charged all the way
up to fourth place at the finish—his first
time off the podium in 2019.
Points leader Nichols started mid-
pack, then fell on lap two and was just
off the pace, going a lap down halfway
through the race. He eventually finished
10th, which was his first non-podium of
2019, as well.
(Above) Not only did Adam Cianciarulo get his third win of the season but also the points lead
heading into the long 250SX West break. (Right) Rookie Garrett Marchbanks (61) showed that he
knows how to run in the mud. He got on the podium for the first time in second place.
