SUPERCROSS
ROUND 5 / FEBRUARY 3, 2019
PETCO PARK / SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA
P54
MONSTER ENERGY AMA SUPERCROSS
450SX
It's been a quiet start to the year for
Tomac (Monster Energy Kawasaki),
but after five rounds, he's now in the
points lead for the first time since
late 2017. Tomac had a perfect day
in San Diego, topping qualifying,
winning his heat race, and winning
the main event.
In the main event, Roczen (Honda
HRC) got the super-critical holeshot
but threw away a good chance to
get his first win since 2017 when he
fell just a couple of turns into the
race, handing the lead to Tomac,
who took full advantage of not
having anyone in front of him on a
muddy and messy track.
it would've been if it were "soupy" from rain all night. "Once that rain
stopped, the dirt started getting thicker, and it started making the
bike heavy and the rhythm sections and all the lines just got sketchy
and squirrelly," Tomac said. "It was really night and day even be-
tween practice, the heat, and the main. That condition [with the rain
stopping early in the night] makes it the hardest, by far."
LIME HURTS
In building motocross tracks, lime is often
used to help absorb moisture. With all the
weather on its way in, Dirt Wurx appar-
ently used quite a bit of lime, but there was
nothing that could've been done to really
keep the San Diego dirt "dry." That being
said, the lime left a lot of the racers with
badly irritated skin, including at least one
racer whose chest was bleeding at the end
of the night.
Briefly...
Marvin Musquin
turned up the heat
late in the race,
passing Roczen
on the last lap for
second place.
