LOOKING BACK
A helmet-less Dick Smothers of TV's weekly Smothers Brothers
Comedy Hour was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago.
The photo was of the TV star on a Montesa 360 street scrambler at Dana
Point, California, while filming for an upcoming episode… We covered a
wet and muddy Sonora Run Enduro in Confidence, California. Less than
half of the 212 entries completed the 65-mile enduro.
That's Rex Staten leading Danny Chandler at Indian Dunes on the
cover of Cycle News 40 years ago. It was taken at round three of the
CMC/Suzuki Golden State MX Series where Jeff Ward, Chandler
and Danny LaPorte came away with the Pro-class wins… We ran
an interview with Californian Jim Turner who was the Canadian MX
Champion… We ran our coverage of the CRC/NMA Santa Claus GP and
the winner was Goat Breker… Tony DiStefano was tuning up on his
new Can-Am at Saddleback Saturday MX.

Here's an advertisement 50 years ago for
Bridgestone Motorcycles that certainly wouldn't fly
these days. It read: "Consider the fringe benefits of
owning a Bridgestone 175+ Dual Twin."
