JANUARY 11, 1989
Supercross was coming so we featured an interview with defending
champ Jeremy McGrath who was pictured on the cover 20 years ago…
We previewed the 1999 AMA Supercross Series… Our 125cc Motocross
Shootout was featured. The winner? The Yamaha YZ125… We ran
part one of our Time Remembered piece with Johnny O'Mara… We
interviewed AMA Superbike racer Anthony Gobert… Ty Davis won the
Tecate Enduro.
We featured the rejuvenated Freddie Spencer on the cover of Cycle News
30 years ago. He was returning to GP racing on his new Marlboro Yamaha
Team and we interviewed the former 250 and 500cc World Champion…
We tested the 1989 Yamaha YZ125W motocrosser… We had coverage of
the Tecate 250K Enduro from Baja California, where an "East Coast" guy
took the win—that guy was Kevin Hines… One of the big news items was
Rick Johnson leaving long-time sponsor Fox Racing.
