EVERTS OUT OF INTENSIVE CARE
A
ccording to a release from his family, Stefan
Everts has been released from intensive care
but is still facing six weeks of rehabilitation in a
hospital in his home country of Belgium.
Everts contracted malaria while attending a char-
ity event in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and
after returning home to Belgium, was admitted to
the hospital where he was placed in an induced
coma. Doctors report that Everts has "made major
steps forward" and has not sustained any perma-
nent damage to his organs or brain.
The release reads: "Again, good news from
Stefan Everts. The 10-time world champion, who
was hit by malaria at the beginning of December,
has traded the intensive care at the University
Hospital of Leuven for the rehabilitation. The
legend will stay in that department for six weeks
to continue working on his recovery.
"For Everts, this is another big step forward. At
the beginning of December, malaria broke out
with him after taking part in Congo in the middle
of November. He fought for a while for his life
and was kept artificially asleep for a while. Everts
fought back and defeated his biggest competi-
tor ever. A few weeks ago, testing has already
shown that he has not sustained permanent
damage to organs and brain.
"In the last few days, Everts has once again
made major steps forward, after which the pro-
fessors decided to move him to rehabilitation.
There he will be working hard on his recovery
over the next few weeks." CN
THE QUEST FOR THE PERFECT PHOTO
H
ow many of us have dreamed
of quitting our job, packing
only the essentials on the back
of the ADV bike and heading
somewhere with no particular
place to go or time to get there?
That's exactly what photographer
Tim Burke did recently, and this
magnificent film documents not
only that life-changing decision
but what potential joys and pitfalls
await those who heed this very
personal call.
Burke pilots his BMW R 1200
GS through some of the most
stunning landscapes this planet has to offer. In this inspiring film, Burke meets up with the Chapin Films
crew in Guatemala and convinces them to help him drag the big GS to the top of Volcán Acatenango for
one of the most spectacular ADV shots you'll ever see.
It's a film shared on the Upshift Online YouTube page, a brilliant ADV publication headed by world
famous supercross, motocross and off road photographer, Simon Cudby. CN
