EMS REVEALS NECK
BRACE STUDY
A
re you still on the fence about wearing a
neck brace? You might want to take a look
at this study put together by Action Sports
EMS, the ambulance service that caters to
amateur motocross races in the Midwest. Ac-
tion Sports EMS has revealed a 10-year study
on the effectiveness of neck braces, collect-
ing data from January 2009 to October 2018
including a total of 9430 patients.
"Over the years we have overhead and had
conversations about the positives and perceived
negatives of wearing various kinds of safety gear,
in particular neck braces," the introduction to the
study reads. "We as a team feel our riders need to
be educated on the mechanics of a neck brace,
what it can and cannot do."
The findings include multiple graphs and statis-
tics, such as the alarming fact that a critical cervi-
cal spine injury is 89% more likely without a neck
brace. Over the course of the 10-year study, there
were 239 recorded cases of critical cervical spine
injuries without a neck brace, compared to only 26
with a neck brace.
