We covered the Dunlop tire test from Daytona, and we ran a photo of
Scott Russell aboard the Harley-Davidson VR1000 on the cover 20
years ago. Russell had just signed a contract with H-D the day before.
Russell was quoted as saying: "The bike is hard to hold on to because of
the vibration…" We covered the LA-Barstow-to-Vegas dual sport ride…
Cliff Palmer won the AMA/PJ1 Arenacross in Perry, Georgia… Ben
Riddle was the big winner at the Florida Winter Olympics. Other top
riders included Mike Alessi, Ivan Tedesco and Bobby Bonds.
The Florida Winter Olympics took center stage 30 years ago. Greg Rand
and Butch Smith were the standout riders that week. Other Olympic
Champions included Kevin Windham (85cc 7-11), Ezra Lusk (85cc 12-13)
and Dennis (aka Denny) Stephenson (125/250 A)… Kevin Schwantz
won the Macau GP… Little known 16-year-old Damon Bradshaw stunned
the MX world when he won the Osaka Japan Supercross in a field that
included Jeff Ward, Rick Johnson
and Ron Lechien. Ward won the
Tokyo Supercross a week later.
