30 Years Ago DECEMBER 14, 1988 We covered the Dunlop tire test from Daytona, and we ran a photo of Scott Russell aboard the Harley-Davidson VR1000 on the cover 20 years ago. Russell had just signed a contract with H-D the day before. Russell was quoted as saying: "The bike is hard to hold on to because of the vibration…" We covered the LA-Barstow-to-Vegas dual sport ride… Cliff Palmer won the AMA/PJ1 Arenacross in Perry, Georgia… Ben Riddle was the big winner at the Florida Winter Olympics. Other top riders included Mike Alessi, Ivan Tedesco and Bobby Bonds. The Florida Winter Olympics took center stage 30 years ago. Greg Rand and Butch Smith were the standout riders that week. Other Olympic Champions included Kevin Windham (85cc 7-11), Ezra Lusk (85cc 12-13) and Dennis (aka Denny) Stephenson (125/250 A)… Kevin Schwantz won the Macau GP… Little known 16-year-old Damon Bradshaw stunned the MX world when he won the Osaka Japan Supercross in a field that included Jeff Ward, Rick Johnson and Ron Lechien. Ward won the Tokyo Supercross a week later.
