have any chance of retaining that
number-one plate, he needed to
win, plain and simple.
But when the race started, it
didn't appear he'd be able to do
so.
"I went into the first corner and I
had no front brake and I fell down,"
the AHM/FMF/Seven-backed FX
450 rider said. "I was dead last
and came all the way up into third
[early on the second lap]."

few slower riders (a fairly frequent
occurrence for a number of races
during the weekend, due at least
in part to the 1546 entries for the
weekend on a course that was by
some estimates less than three

came into today obviously
knowing what I had to do
considering the points
situation—if Zach Bell wins, what
place I have to get to wrap up
the championship—so I came in
knowing exactly what needed to
happen," Trevor Stewart said.
The Johnny Campbell Racing
Honda rider's 24-point lead over
3 Bros./STI Husqvarna's Bell
allowed him a measure of forgive-
ness in that even if Bell were to
win, finishing ninth or better in the
eighth and final round of the AMA
Big 6 West Coast Grand Prix
Series (WCGP) would be enough
to clinch it from the defending
champion.
Bell was also keenly aware
of what he needed to do in the
90-minute, $2000 feature race
