LOOKING BACK
The "Mini-Marvel" in action was pictured on the cover of Cycle News
50 years ago. Seven-year-old Fred Chase put on an exhibition during
intermission at the Archie Clark Memorial scrambles in Stockton,
California… We covered the Edison Dye International Motocross in Santa
Cruz, California. Some of those who took part included Joel Robert,
Bob Grossi, Dave Bickers, Torleif Hansen, John Hately, Barry
Higgins and Lars Larsson… More than 100 drag-racing enthusiasts
loaded up their trucks and headed to Lions Raceway to put their
motorcycles and skills to the test.
Forty years ago, we focused on all things desert (and it's beauty), and
the threat of it being shut down to motorcycle riding and racing. We
also looked back at the history of desert racing and even took a look
into the future. On the subject of the desert, we ran a story about riding
motorcycles in Death Valley… We ran a test of Darrell Shultz's 1979
Maico 450… Randy Mamola topped the AFM road races at Riverside
International Raceway.
