Es- pecially in E3, we started a fair bit back so we had to pass a lot of guys in that first test. "That was my biggest prob- lem was not to throw it away on the first day and just to make sure we got through the test clean and didn't make any mistakes. "I was stoked when I actu- ally found out I was on the first minute the next day because I knew I would have clean air, and then we went from there. (Each day's starting order assigns fastest riders first so based on that, Robert, Austra- lian Daniel "Chucky" Sanders and Milner would be on the first row to leave the start for day quick start the Americans enjoyed at the beginning of the week with the U.S. WT and Rob- ert leading both the teams and individual standings after com- pleting the first day. However, Australia lurked Australia's Daniel Milner dominated E3 all week and owned the overall individual title from the second day. WALKING TALL After technical inspection and im- pound, Ryan Sipes shared, "We've all walked a LOT. We've put a lot of work into trying to know these tests inside and out, and I think we've got a good shot [at winning]." He confirmed the team had walked each test a mini- mum of three times each for a total of almost 70 miles of walking in the week before. And that's not counting the tests walked after each day's racing was done in order to get better lines selected. "My feet hurt a lot. The legs hurt the first day or two, then they kind of get used to it because you're doing 15, 18 miles a day or whatever. But you have to do it. If you don't, you're going to get smoked." IRON ABBOTTS Destry Abbott finished his last chemo treatment just last month so he wasn't 100 percent when he lined up for his 10th ISDE, but he wanted to be there for son Cooper's first Six Days. "It seemed like every day I'd go down in a couple tests, but that's the way it goes," he said. "I honestly didn't come here with the highest expectations. I'm still recovering [from chemo]; my body's still not where it should be. I just didn't want to pass up this op- portunity with Cooper." Unfortunately, Destry crashed out on the third day for his first ISDE DNF. Cooper kept on going and as a member of the fourth- Briefly... Two big crashes on the first day spelled a slow-ish start for Steward Baylor, but he dismissed the pain and battled back to claim second E2 behind teammate Robert.
