IN THE WIND P34 GRANT, HURLEY, NICOLL CROWNED AT VET MX WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP N ow in its 34th running, Glen Helen hosted the Dubya World Vet MX Championships over the weekend where over 1300 entries from around the world competed for age- class honors. The three Pro events, 30+, 40+ and 50+, were again the high- lights of the weekend, with Josh Grant, Daryl Hurley and Kurt Nicoll taking the big wins, respectively. Thirty-two-year-old Josh Grant was among the "young 'uns" at the event, and he sailed to a big win in the 30+ Pro division on Sunday, besting Jeff Loop and Tonni Andersen for the overall podium. Daryl Hurley and Kris Keefer rounded out the top-five. It marked Grant's first time racing the Vet MX World Cham- pionship, something he's been wanting to do in recent years. "This is the first time I've actually been able to do this because I've been under contracts and stuff with other teams. I'm stoked to get the first one. I definitely woke up this morning feeling old that I can ride the Vet Nationals now." For Grant, there was more to it than winning the race. He wanted to pay tribute to some- one who has meant a lot to his career. "Tom White is pretty much the main reason I wanted to come out there. I've known Tom a long time, since I was a little kid. Just the amount of impact he's had on our indus- try, especially out here at Glen Helen, I wanted to honor him and come out here and do it for him." In the 40+ Pro class, it was 42-year-old former pro Daryl Hurley who came away with the overall win. Hurley went 2-1 to take the win, besting Kurt Nicoll (3-2) and Keefer (1-4). It marked Hurley's return to the event after having won the 40+ Pro division in 2016 right after turning 40. The New Zealander was glad to return with all his "Kiwi friends" for another year, this time aboard an MX Heaven Suzuki RM-Z450. In the 50+ Pro class, Champi- on MX KTM rider Kurt Nicoll had been training hard to take on his familiar rival Doug Dubach, but unfortunately the Yamaha rider was not able to attend the race, leaving Nicoll to collect both moto wins quite handily. "It's a real bummer Doug's not here," Nicoll said. "We have a good rivalry going and it's always fun to race against him. But I had a great weekend and I'm happy to take home another Vet Cham- pionship."
