LOOKING BACK
Mert Lawwill was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years
ago for winning the Ascot 8-Mile National, the final round of the
year. Lawwill might've won the race but Gary Nixon wrapped up the
championship… We headed to Northern California to cover the High
Sierra M.C. Mammoth Motocross, which lured many of the country's
top motocrossers, including Tim Hart, Russ Darnell, J.N. Roberts and
Gary Bailey. But the big winners were Ron Nelson and Gary Conrad…
Preston Petty was tearing it up at Saddleback MX.
Enduro, speedway and motocross were featured on the cover of Cycle
News 40 years ago. Bob Hannah won both motos in the 500cc class
in round four of the Trans-AMA MX Series at Axton, Virginia's Lake Sugar
Tree Raceway… We covered the U.S. Speedway Championship at Costa
Mesa, where Mike Bast captured his sixth title… We also covered the
Bonneville National Speed Trials where Don Vesco made headlines for
reaching 333 mph and Marcia Holley for becoming the first woman to
join Bonneville's 200 mph club.

Scott Summers made history 30
years ago when he won the GNCC at
Mt. Morris; it was his first GNCC win
of his career and the very first GNCC
win for a four-stroke motorcycle.
Twenty years ago, Honda built this unforgettable ad for Ben Bostrom
and his AMA Superbike Championship-winning RC45.
