DRIVER IN NICKY HAYDEN'S FATAL
CRASH GUILTY OF HOMICIDE
T
he driver involved in the
cycling death of 2006 Mo-
toGP World Champion Nicky
Hayden has been found guilty of
homicide in an Italian court and
handed a one-year suspended
jail sentence, the loss of his
license and ordered to pay court
costs.
The 31-year-old Italian driver,
who remains unnamed, was
found to be driving his car at
approximately 70km/h in a
50km/h zone and fatally struck
Hayden, who for his part has
been found to have not stopped
at a stop sign while cycling in
Rimini, Italy.
An expert witness told the
court the driver could have
"entirely avoided the incident"
had he been traveling at the
posted speed sign, regardless
of whether Hayden had stopped
at the stop sign or not.
An official accident report ap-
portioned 30 percent of blame
to the driver.
The judge will reveal in 90
days' time his reasoning for
handing down his punishment.
The Hayden family is still
pursuing a $6 million civil suit
against the driver, the maximum
amount covered by the driver's
Italian insurance policy. CN
