li htweights M.C. Scrambles at Perris C.W. Wheat (\I) duelled with Arvll Sparks, Ilk. the IGOd 0 I d day s! .... By Maureen Lee PERRIS, CALIF. April 20, 1969. The Lightweights were the host club at Perris wi th a track surface that developed into the slickest ooe yet of the season. Like wow! We've never seen the ambulaDce move SO many times, prompting track owner Gerry Burton to get on the P.&. and say "please slow down!" Under new DIstrict rules, the Ughtwe1gbts themselves were able to ride their own event providing their working position was covered for the time they were on the track, and it worked out beaulifully. There was barely a race where their str1ldng Jumpers weren't present on the Une and yet there was never a breakdown in heat boards or a shortage of flagmen. All classes used the long course but as usual the heavyweights had to wait around for hours past their stated starting time waiting for the tiddlers to be run off. Two Lightweights, Jay Lewis (Yamaha) and Steve Herrera (Honda) relinquished duties for a while to take first and second In the 50cc class, with Mike Myers on a Suzuki taking the th1rd. 1b1rteen-year-old Dehbie Sanders on her fast little Kawasaki won the Powder Putt, beating out the more experienced Kay Wright (Suzuki) Sandy Lambert(Hodaka) and Sharon Wolf (Bultaco. Debbie is really proving herself a threat. It was Kawasaki again in the l00Amateur race. Mark Kruse, fresh from his Tucson victory WOO over two more 'SaId's ridden by Doug Mason and Chuck Claydon, but Claydon's th1rd made his trip up from San DIego worth while. Gary Caldwell (Suzuki) wrapped up the 100 Expert Main with Steve Nichols (Yamaha) second and Troy McKee (Hodaka) th1rd. John Rice 011 a Sachs had to really work for hts win in the 125 Maln. Two Yamahas ridden by Bob Hardison and Larry Bird got the drop on John but he really got to work and made it up to the front spot 011 the nine lap race. It was a good ooe! F <.'urteen Experts started the 250 race _ another nine lapper, ooe race ooIy. Eric Olesen (Yamaha) took the 1eIId and never lost It. He flat Dewl Larry Taylor on a Bultaco took over secODd when an unidentified rider holding ooto secood dumped it. 'Ibe two Ossas of WIllie Hackie and Dan Carleton had meanwhile been working up through the crowd, with Carleton launching a drive, in the last two laps to catch Taylor, but he jUStcouldn't swing It. Charles Gann (Bultaco) Doug Mason (Yamaha) and Ed $h1nault (Husky) finished the 250Amaleur Main in that order, but it was another race that saw coosiderable soring out amoog the front runners. All the big bores rode motos with the 350,500 and Open Experts running together. Mike Posey onC.H. Wbeat'sTriumph won but Tony Denius on hts little Harley led for over half the 9-lap race and we think it was only Tony's physical condition from his recent car crash that lost him the win. He joetplalngotpoopedl ArvU SParks (Triumph) and C.H. Wheat (Malco) chased each other around the whole race with SParks ending third. Bultaco rider John Sprague was fifth. Chuck Wheat on his Malco did in the 350-500 Amateur class and it was a good one with Glen Brunsoo(Bultaco) and Andy Skeel looking awtully fast on a HODda right In there. Skeel really wailed but dropped it one time and that moved htm away from a chance at the win. Wheat and Brunson stayed in IlPright positioos and the young Matco rider really deserved hts trophy. Tom LaFortune woo the Open Amateur bash, that really was a bashl Far too many riders went down in it. Art Armatillas (Triumph) out of the Novice class and five stra1gbt wins there, came In second with Jerry Aucutt (BSA) third. Trials rider John Kavanaugh (Triumph) took fourth. All in all it was a good days' racing, despite the crashes. 'Ibe host club all worked together and did a good'job although we suspect the 250 Novices were muttering to themselves. The program was badly planned there when the semi preceeded the Main with no race in between. The troops who transferred directly were a little pooped to say the least!
