The Drag Race Scene By Dan Zeman and Betty Nlcbols This Sunday brougbt out 35 bikes to Lions. This may seem low, but a lot of the guys are busy rigbt now tearing down their bikes in boPes of building machines for bigger and better performances. It could be that they are working for some of that gold that will be banded around after the All-Bike Meet on July 4th. Speaking of July 4th - bere is the list of people who bave donated so far: Lions Drag Strip, $1,000.00, Dan Zeman, $25, Betty Nicbols, $25.00, 2-Stroke Modification Center, $25.00, Pete Devlin, $5.00 and Don Green, $5 •.00. That gives us a total of $1,085.00, but that's a long way from our goal of $2,000.00. We baven't heard a word from any of the cycle or specialty sbops so far, but we're In bopes. Bob Braverman is still working on his 3-cylinder Kawasaki engine (set into a frame of his own making), but he brought it out to see what it would do at this point. He didn't come into the money or win any trophies, but he was still satisfied. He ran an E.T. of 11.92 and 115.83 mpb. Once he gets out all the bugs, this machine Is going to be terrific competition. All the other riders are giving this new bike second looks. "The Dirty Old Man", Jack Murpby took Top Street on his 3-cylinder Kawasaki. He really digs this machine, but says It Isn't the bike for the unioformed. Too powerful. In MoUtied Street, "Drag Bike Engineering" ridden by Steve Brackett creamed Tony Nicosia aboard his Kawasaki 500 to take the honors in that class. Tim Mark is sbowing better E.T. and speed improvement every week. He took Top Gas for this week and is still working for better records. Jeff Gough is still tops in the Fueler class. He bas held this status for atleast 3 weeks standing. At speeds of 147 mph this dragger Is going to be hard to sur- pass. Everyone was really surprised when Ken Kotalac showed up with his Vincent - with fuel injection, no less! Jim Cook sported a wheelie-bar on the back of his Triumph. It's a full bar that Is actually part of the frame. This man Isn't taking any cbances! There was a lot of confusion between the riders AND the officials this week over the A.H.R.A. breakdowns. We're In hopes that you will cut them out and study them so there won't be any confusion in the future. We're going to be studying too. By Betty Nlcbols MEET THE DRAGGER MEL DISHAROON DISHAROON bas always been a happy bachelor and says he plans on staying that way for awhile. He was born in Washington D.C. The national monuments and libraries, be saId, "were my playgrounds as ayoung- ster!" Moving to California about seven years ago, be figured the best thing for him to do was to buy a bouse that be could fix up as be pleased. About two years ago, be found such a bouse in Redondo Beacb, so he bought It. He started remodeling It awhile back, but he sald his work bas taken much longer than he expected. he bas time, he likes to go "varmint hunting" with his twenty-two rifle. He says It's a lot of fun sitting out on the cold desert all nigbt long freezing and making noises like a dying rabbit. Disharoon tried his first venture In drag racing in 1963 with a HarleyDavidson street bike. He was put down for the first three weeks running when he finally decided to put a stop to that. He went home and started doing a little thinking and lots of work. The one he Is now racing bears little resemblance to the machine he started out with. It's loaded with all the racing goodies. He has certainly shown a lot of improvement, not only with his machine, but with his strip record. He took Bee Line Wlnternationals in 1968 and Woos When Drag Strip for their big event Nov. 1968. He sald he "really lucked out" by winning those two. Disharoon officially named his bike "Doodle Dasher". He got the name from a favorite record album that he has in his collection. He Is parts manager for HarleyDavidson of Long Beach, so he bas everything he needs at his fingertips (at cost) to give him the best machine his Imagination will allow him to build. Besides his "fleet" of H-D machines, he recently purchased a brand, spanking new 1969 El Camino. He said his Idea of happiness is Harleys and Chevys. ~out his name. It's no deep dark secret, really. In fact, he was glad to tell me. It's Millard' Lance Disharoon.
