AMATEUR WINS DESERT DUEL IN .THE DUST Dave (41) Lewis, Rick (151) Shirey, John (39) Gaetz and Danny (7.) Kline blast past"e Cycle News c_a. Tom Muto #5X on a Husky was tbird. Mike Patrick #48X pulled in fourth, followed by Phil Bowers. George Zuber #8X was next (all on 250cc Yamabas). Steve Holladay #10 slid in next on a Husky to take secood 500 Expert followed by the first open class mach1ne, a Norton with big Tom Maxwell #23 aboard. Larry Ptulzenreuter #42X was secood 250 Amateur in. Glen Lane 1299 was the first 500cc Novice on a Husky, and Morris Norman #316 was the secood 500 Novice in, also Husky mounted. Walley Casperson #149 won Open Amateur on a Rickman TrIumpb, DennIs Renpel '56 was first 500 Amateur on a Busky followed by Rick ShIrey #158, taking second 500cc Amateur on a Bultaco. ShIrey said the course was so dusty t!lat you couldn't see a tb1Dg. "I don't know where I have been I was bitting things I never saw!" Eric Jensen #717x took the 125cc class again on his Sachs. Ron Grieve #497x took first 250cc novice on a Yamaha. :Odr~ Let FUN and Trail Bikes ODelln The Dust The "little bikes" started after the dust settled and Wes Anderson Jr., #2 on a B- D, bad the lead at the smoke bomb, followed by Gene Cannady 141 on a Sachs. The race was to go one loop, and the H-D pits crew including Dick 0' Brien, the factory racing engineer, were waiting for the leader to come througb. Meanwhile out on the course the leaders bad cangbt up to the big bikes and couldn't see wen for the dust. Cannady got Anderson fn the thick dust then. Terry Clark #6 011 a Hodaka got them botIl, but bad engfne trouble and dropped back. The Cannady-Anderson duel in the dust continued until the tIn1sb where Cannady took the win. Anderson was secood. Gary Grlfffn #23 011 a Zundapp was third, and Ron Matheny #141 on a Sacbswasfourth. Roger Peters #45 on a Hodaka took first Amateur and John Speakman #177 took first novice on a Van Tech. APRIL 20- It was the day of the big upset as the young Amateur, Tom Poteet #34X Bultaco mounted, won the dusty ninety-two mile, two-loop desert race in one bour and forty minutes. and, there was a new winner in the 100cc class as Gene Cannady #42 on a Sacbs pulled in alter one loop to take the win. The course was super dusty, with a rocky upbl1l and a lot of fast open boondock trails and a five mile long, straigbtasn-an-arrow fire road. A t the smoke bomb alter the start, Larry Bergqulst #888 on a 360 Bultaco bad a good lead, followed by "Smoke bomb" John Gaetz #39 on a Triumpb, Steve Staats #5 on a Harley-Davidson and Tom Poteet was also right up there. After a fifty-minute wal t, the leader could be seen coming througb the pits and it was Poteet, with a good lead over second man Phil Bowers #6X on a 250 Yamaha, followed by Staatsl Bergquist ran Into some problems and didn't make It. Gaetz looped his Triumpb on the rocky bI1l and lost first spot. Poteet held the lead and pulled in on the second and final loop for the win, with a two minute lead over second man Steve Staats who took the first 500cc class on his 350cc Harley-Davidson.
