Peterson on a Mota Beta catchlng the win. The racing program finished slightly earlier than usual so the crew could get tbe track ready for the next day. Nomads Clob Race Sunday, for a change ·the big bikes were run in the morning and small bikes in the afternoon. The people started coming in very early with this being the first point race here for the NoMads. Girl 650 Rider Riding in her 8th race Sunday was Lana Paige. Lana was at one time holding down 3rd place in the first Novice Open Mota. Lana does her own work on the 650 Triumph, says she only needs help tightening bolts. Lana took up competitioo because she wanted to go fast, faster than you can ride on the street and she found out by riding competition what she didn't know about riding. She also likes the big bike over a small one because you can· steer with the throttle." Lana got off hard at the start of her 2nd mota as the result of another rider's wheelie, but was unhurt. She rides weal'" ing a pink and blac k polka-dot Bell Star helmet and pink leathers, Opeo Expert Moto The hlgh point man in this bash was M. VanAcker on a Triumph with C. Wheat on a Triumph in second and J. Larson 3rd also Triumph mounted. In the 100cc Main, it was Terry Danaher on a Bultaco taking the flag wi th J. Peterson on a Mota Beta in second. Our young Chris Smith was having quite a day of falling, always leading until he comes off. Chris fell in the same place 2 Or three times trying to get going in the 100ccMain and finally had to "forget it." Last Race _ Jost for Fun'• not the least, was really a show. There was no official winner in that all three bikes crossed the finish line together after changing positions 2- to 3 times a lap with D. Carlton on a 250 Greeves doing wheelies virtually all the way around, with Coyote D. Wayne on a Bultaco saying "that's the kind of a fun race I like!" And J. Conneley also doing hls share of turning it on. All in all it was a long weekend of racing but a very satisfying one at that. (Results on page 16) The last race of the day and hy rar 500 Novice Maio BSA-mounted and ever a threat on the starting line, is Ron Stinnett. Stinnett pulled a hole shot on us all from the extreme outside of the starting line. This race was marked by a big field of riders spreading way out with the first three places far out in front. This reporter followed the next two over the wire, seeing two Or three riders falloff along the way. L. Davis caught the second place on hls BSA. Small Bikes Afternoon The small bikes put on a fast and furious show in the afternoon, starring a· very large crowd of riders, prohably 125 or more. Paul Sutherland made the show COOLIES COLUMN By Wes Cooley In last week's issue under VOICES "Let's not be Hasty", yOU probably read the letter by John Ace Carter #236x from Canoga Park. All we can say to Mr. Carter is that we respect hls opinion concerning Bay Mare. Of course, you're not required to ride on it if you don't like it. With regard to our races being some of the worst you've ever participated in, Mr. Carter we're checking our files to see whlch events you participated in, since we'd like to know which one was so bad. We do admit that we're not perfect, but we certainly are trying hard and think we throw pretty good events. We're always open for constructive criticism by you and some help from you in staging some of our upcoming events. We're sure your vast knowledge of racing and good constructive criticism can only make our events better. Under GUEST EDITORfAL, I think Jean Carter, President of District 37, did an admirable job in answering some of the questions posed in my column several weeks ago. There are a couple of things which I thlnk Jean left out, unintentionally, which I would like to clarifY and put straight for the record; not to be critical, but to make sure everythlng is straight. Number one, the pit fee at Ascot is $2.50. The promoter gives 40% of the gate (spectator) for the purse; however, 10% of this is given to the AMA for insurance which leaves 30% (If the gate to be given to the riders. This weekend, March 5th, will see the third event in the Silver Cup Mota series at Castaic Park. The Course has been changed and some of the bad cor- WOULD YOU ,_.I ~. .It' . '. ~.~. . • - ......... The first event will get under way at 10:00 and we look forward to a good rough track, as well as good weather, at least this is what the weatherman predicts. At our past two events, we had a great deal of encouragement and we're glad to see tbe riders are interested in riding some good old fashloned rough scrambles. In the article written concerning the second Castaic event, several comments were made ahout equipment the riders were participating on and also the scar- ing. It is very difficult, within ten to fifteen minutes after an event is completed, to give out completely accurate results past the first three Or the trophy winners. Inasmuch as we give out OUI trophies right after each event, the scoring team is mostl.y interested in the trophy winners.
