. ~ o .s: '" :E 9 THE FINISH LINE By BOXY ROCKWOOD I I ~. .Move up to the 90cc thriller that is really throwing its 155 Ibs. around the competitions a cross America, a nd coming out on top in more ra ces than competito rs like to mention. The HODAKA Ace 90 is a " Giant Kille r" , a nd there's no mystery to it. HODAKA w a s desig ned in Ame rica for the g reat variety of rough country and competition you d emand fr om you r moto rcycle investment. Its 4-speed, constant-mesh gea rbox is built to really ta ke it and stay w ith yo u for more. No other lightweight is as d urable, nor d isplays the true craftsma ns hip of the a mazing HODAKA Ace 90 . .. GO see fo r you rsel f. .. • .. , .. . . . Sammy Tanner is still the King of Ascot. Since the If., mile speedway was built, Tanner and AI Gunter rank together as the only two riders to do all the winning of the events and the poin t battles. Sam my is at the peak of his racing career and Gunter is in th e midst of trying to make a comeback. Both can be ' expected t o race again in '66. With all his wins, Tanner sh ould be a happy man. Oddly enough he is not. The BSAs he rides at Ascot are no longer in production. Parts are becoming harder and harder to come by. He has no factory or distributor backing. The Tanner-Axthell-BSA combination is th e bi g one at Ascot and ha s been for th e last two years. It ma y not be th e same three-way situ ati on next seas on . Sammy and C.R. are look in g for ideas--and for changes, if necessary. E d d i e Hammond took the high point amateur award with 29 wins for the season. This amount is far from the amateur wi n record , but certainly Hammond is one of the best to ever move through th e ranks. His four dash wins against the experts plus his one main event in the "A" cla ss rank him with few amateurs that have ever accompolished as much. It was 38 wins for high point nov ice J ohnny Isaacs. He developed at a . • steady pace and his fast Yamaha did the rest. He's a smooth rider like Hammond, and both moved .d own this way fr om the n on-racing state of Wyoming to prove they could ride and win with the best. Tanner, Hammond and Isaacs grabbed the glory this year at Ascot, but not to be overlooked are the three men that stood behind them all year, C. R. Axthell, Jack O'Brien and Bert Smith. Things might have been much different without these tuners. Ring down one curtain on another fine season for Ascot . It was a good seas on for 24 different riders who won main events. Now begins t he winter layoff that will offer a few TT 's and some new road racing. Also Southern Califo rnia might look for indoor shor t tracking in January and F eb ruary. Daytona time and the speed week th at runs down th ere from March 1320 will be here sooner th an most riders and spons ors care to think about. During the "off season" readers of th is columr.. can expect to learn about new riders, r ider changes, new tracks and new races. In a few weeks this column will carry the rundown of the new rule changes for AMA r acing in '66. Hope to see y ou all at the banquet this Friday night, Nov . 19th at the Gardena Elks Lodge .Tickets will be available at the door. P. O. BOX 214287 SACRAMENTO.
