"Society (including racing) is tightening its
grip on wayward behavior, especially public
wayward behavior."
Michael Lock Interview
"The successful Kawasaki rac-
ing effort was a double act, with
Ricky Howerton being the team
owner and crew chief, as well
as the tuner, and Bryan Smith
the rider. Over several years,
Ricky had built a green-and-
black bike based on a 650 en-
gine that was really his creation,
so when he went to Indian with
Bryan, that technology went,
too. And the remaining Kawasa-
kis in the paddock, competent
as they are, have struggled."
Any question as to why
Polaris bought off Howerton
and Smith? They purchased the
number-one plate and prevent-
ed Jared Mees from actually
having to race to get the num-
ber-one plate. Just think about
what racing we would have now
with Smith and Howerton kick-
ing his butt on a Kawasaki.

I bet whoever was responsible
for putting fuel into Briar's tank
hauled ass be for he made it
back to the pits. What a shitty
way to lose a race.

I just love it when y'all take a
trip in The Wayback Machine.
Thanks, Cycle News. They
know a thing or two cause
they've seen a thing or two...
…So, after I give Cycle News
a big thumbs up, I learn that
they are printing one special
print issue of Cycle News in the
run-up to Straight Rhythm. I was
a subscriber to the print edition
since I was a kid (I turn 60 in
a week) and planned my week
around when it would arrive in
the mail. I have saved as many
of the old newsprint editions as
I can. So I was quite excited to
learn they were going to print
one more! Then, I learn that I
have to live in the southern part
of The Land of Fruits and Knutts
to even have a chance of see-
ing this print edition, let alone
purchase one to put in my col-
lection. This, quite frankly, in my
opinion, stinks of discrimination.
Come on Cycle News. We all
just want to be treated equally.
Just saying.

The special run-up issue that
you are referring to is actually
going to be the event program
for the 2018 Red Bull Straight
Rhythm (see Wind pg 46), but
since we like your first com-
ments so much, we'll send you
one. We just need an address.

Normally, Michael Scott, I think
your articles are the best. Times
are a changing, though. Society
(including racing) is tightening
its grip on wayward behavior,
especially public wayward be-
havior. Compare McEnroe with
Williams—the difference is not
about sex, in my opinion—it is
one of tightening standards.
Dicking with other riders in
a race has become unaccept-
able—unless you have the pad-
dock pull of Rossi.
